Despite what you might think, you don’t need to go crazy and market on every social media platform as an Indie Developer. You will end up spreading yourself too thin. Honestly, you should only use the ones relevant to your content, after all, we don’t have our own marketing team. In fact, let me help you figure out which ones are best for you.

The Best Platforms For An Indie Developer

The best platforms for Indie Developers are Twitter, a personal website, and Instagram. You might wonder why that is. Well, let’s breakdown why with each platform.

Twitter

Twitter is a pre-established platform that many people in the Game Development and Indie Development community use. It’s been around for a while, so it’s easier to make connections here and get people involved. This is the best place to start for establishing your game’s brand, or, your brand while seeing what’s important in the community. Now, let’s move on to the personal website.

Personal Website

The personal website allows you to create development updates on the game; more importantly, it acts as a source of truth for updates and information for your game. By keeping this going it allows you to push for real metrics with your audience. For example, this website we have here is a perfect option for creating an email list; an email list allows you to send emails to people interested in your content. The website also allows people to contact you in a simple way via the website contact information. So, with that out of the way, let’s move onto the next big one, Instagram.

Instagram

Instagram is the new kid on the block in my opinion; it’s still pretty young and has not been overrun with Indie Developers and people in the Game Development space yet. That’s prime time space for those who want to differentiate themselves early in Instagram’s life span. Because games are an extremely visual medium, you can showcase screenshots and behind the scene contents on Instagram, which helps a lot when promoting your game. The best part again is that it’s not as crowded as Twitter. Therefore, you can carve out your own space here and make a huge difference. That’s extremely important because you never want to be in direct competition with anyone. Carving out your own niche and hashtags on Instagram will help you accomplish that. But, for now, those are the ones to prioritize.

In terms of which one is most important, Twitter, Personal site, Instagram in that order. Indies are very common on Twitter, so it’s a good idea to join the community.

Until next time, stay tuned for another post coming soon regarding Facebook.
